Subject Content
The textiles product design course requires students to think creatively, develop their sketching techniques and construct unique and challenging fabric products.The work begins with short focused practical tasks set by the teacher to develop the students’ practical competence, proficiency and creativity.The students choose their own design brief and product to construct products in accordance with their strengths and current trends in fashion.This work is always to a very high standard of design and manufacture.
Methods of Study
Study methods revolve around a basic hands on approach, where students work on individual and group design and manufacturing assignments. Students develop their skills through a range of teaching strategies which include the use of computer aided design and manufacture, textiles manufacturing exercises and high level graphic and sketching tasks. Students will use of a range of ICT applications including web research, will participate in discussions (both group and with course tutor). They will make presentations of their work, undertake written assignments and undertake visits to museums.
Theoretical knowledge is delivered through dedicated lessons and a range of research projects.
Methods of Assessment
AS LEVEL
Unit 1 Materials, components and application
This is a 2 hour written paper based primarily on Materials and Components. It is worth 50% of the AS marks and 25% of the A level marks if the course is continued.
Unit 2 Coursework
This is internally assessed and externally moderated. This is a design and manufacture project of either two smaller projects or one large project (within guidelines). The coursework is worth 50% of the AS marks and 25% of the A level marks if the course is continued.
A2 LEVEL
Unit 3 Design and Manufacture
This is a 2 hour written paper based primarily on Design and Manufacture. It is worth 25% of the A level marks.
Unit 4 Design and Making Practice
This is internally assessed and externally moderated. This is a design and manufacture project of your choice (within guidelines). It is worth 25% of the A level marks.
Entry Requirements
You should have a GCSE in Technology at grade B or above.
