Physical Education

Examining Boards – OCR

Subject Content

This course helps the student to understand the richness and diversity of Sport and Physical Education. It examines the performer in action, exploring the anatomical and physiological factors which influence the performance, and how the mind and body process complex physical skills.

Considerations are given to how people prepare themselves psychologically for performance or competition, highlighting how tutors, coaches and performers can optimise their performance. The understanding of sport is further enhanced by exploring its historical development through the centuries and how today’s society and many cultures have influenced contemporary sport. Students are also expected to perform practically.

Methods of Study

You will experience a wide range of study methods, developing your skills and knowledge through a combination of teacher lead and self-directed learning activities. You will be expected to arrive at each lesson well prepared with an adequate level of knowledge to be able to contribute effectively. You need to carry out independent research (ie via books, internet, journals, manuals, newspapers). You will deliver presentations (both individual and group) and produce displays. On a practical level you will improve your practical performance by participating at club level and by coaching other students. You will also be required to critically evaluate another player’s performance through observation and be able to talk effectively about the performance. You will need to demonstrate your abilities to collate information, take part in discussion in order to communicate knowledge and understanding and participate in experimental situations e.g. role playing, laboratory work.
