Students deliver serious messages

Following the ‘Question Time’ session on 26th January and some group work surrounding political issues, all eight Year 13 Forms took part in Monday’s Mock Election. The winning Form would receive a prize of £100 to spend on a group event of their choice.

Students were free to choose the topic of their campaign speech and individuals were given certain responsibilities for the campaign e.g. spokesperson, speech writer, campaign manager, publicity co-ordinator etc.

During the two weeks between the two sessions, students developed posters to advertise their campaigns. Some students even produced cakes, T-shirts and rosettes advertising campaign slogans.

The issues students were campaigning for were mainly centred on College issues although some talked about issues relating to education for students with special needs and also raising awareness around the issues of cancer research and the dangers of smoking. Other students raised issues around developing facilities within the College.

The winning campaign came from Form MFD, whose spokesperson was Rob. Entering the forum wearing a cape, to the soundtrack of “eye of the tiger”, the students were obviously enjoying themselves but they had a serious message to deliver. Together they campaigned for healthier food options within the College canteen and highlighted what the benefits would be for everyone.

Members of the St Helens Council were present to oversee the voting process, providing ballot papers, voting booths and ballot boxes to make the experience as realistic as possible. The ballot papers however were designed so that students could not vote for their own Form.

Students entered into the process very enthusiastically and became very competitive. It is a process that most of them found rewarding and enjoyable, giving them a much clearer picture of political issues and processes.

John Skinley from the Council is returning to the College on Thursday to speak to all Year 13s about the importance of their vote in the next local and national election. He will also explain the process they need to follow to register themselves.
