All students at Rainford College are expected to supplement their academic studies with a variety of extra-curricular activities to enrich and broaden their educational experience.
Students at Rainford can choose to take part in any of the following enrichment activities:-
In addition to Tuesday afternoons when there is an opportunity to play sports and take part in enrichment, students will have a number of non contact /study periods.
Many students spend time working in the community either within local primary schools, doing voluntary work in hospitals/homes for the elderly or in local industry.
Many of our students, particularly those intending to teach, use the resource of the whole school to gain valuable experience. A scheme has been running now for several years whereby some of our senior students work alongside students with learning difficulties – a valuable experience for both parties. Additionally, many students assist at local primary schools with whom we have good contacts. Others act as mentors, motivating and encouraging younger students who, for whatever reason, are not fulfilling their potential.
All of our students are given the opportunity to study the Extended Project Qualification during Year 13. This is an optional qualification, equivalent to an AS level and worth up to 70 UCAS points. It is designed to compliment and stretch our students in whatever subject area they choose. Students are given free choice in their project topic and are supported on a one-to-one basis by their Project Supervisor.
The College newspaper and website is another arena in which students can develop their communication skills and powers of argument. This has been hugely popular of late and many budding journalists cut their teeth at Rainford College.
Opportunities exist for students to take part in a wide range of sporting activities both on a friendly and competitive level.
Many students who join us at Rainford College have already achieved Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards and enrol for the Gold Scheme. It is also possible for new participants to begin the Scheme at this level.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Performing Arts whether it be Drama productions, singing in the choir or generally making music in a variety of arenas – such as the annual College Music Evening.
More generally there are a host of visits and social events organised within the College which provide lively and invigorating opportunities.
The Leavers’ Dinner Dance has become another regular event on the College Calendar giving us all a chance to 'don' our best attire and providing a fitting end to College study.
These are just some of the activities that enrich the curriculum and present a lively and stimulating experience for students.
Students are given opportunities to take part in various overseas trips. Expeditions to Ghana and India in 2009 and 2010 have been focused on voluntary work in local communities and have encouraged active participation in fundraising leading up to the expedition.
